introspective periscope : peeking inside since Y2K ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- the gift 15:53:33 - 2000-10-20 My question is this: if someone could offer you their heart but not their soul, is it prudent to settle for such a gift? That is the dilemma. Oh, that I were a philosopher. The Gift he could not give her his soul, but he offered her his heart, and she was faltering-faltering, digging deep to find something in him, kind and bright and warm, digging within herself to find the same to offer him. he could not offer her his soul, but he offered her his heart, companionship and company, quick wit and conversation, comfortable silences and nights of unbroken sleep, haunted with memory and the ghosts of reminder and reality. it wasn't his soul she'd get to hold, but the heart was hers for the taking. she faltered-faltered, unsure, for taking the heart without the soul, without the breath of all that he was was like taking an empty box, was to compromise her own, to compromise her love and her own light dimmed in disappointment, and his honesty crushed out the embers of her hope in the ash of her contemplation. but all the same, she took his heart, for it was all he had to give of himself, she took his heart with the hope of claiming more some sunny afternoon, and she glowed dimly, but she glowed, lest she finally fall to the darkness of nothing: the lack of feeling, his said apathy. she took what he could give in exchange for all that she was, and the light that came from inside of him was enough for today. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- .what came before. - .what happened next. a diamond at the bottom of the drain - 20 october 2017 |
