outdoors opera

summer like autumn - first of june, 2003

"every day is like sunday."~the smiths

its been hectic all around with the aftermath of the funeral, the comings home, the falling in love again with the same man you've loved for two years, back to the grind at work...like i said: hectic.

after a friday night reunion with my very best friend over baked macaroni and cheese and beets and spur of the moment pineapple upside down cake and wine and frozen remnants of brownies from easter sunday...we talked as the rain came down...as we sat safely on our porch that resembles a warm hug on evenings like that. the light dim and the cards being dealt over conversation and laughs until well past midnight...and the suggestion that this could be an all summer thing.

and we should do something on sunday.

so the pittsburgh opera is performing for free at this place called hartwood acres tonight and of course, since the rain thats falling on most of the northeast, it seems, has moved on and the weather is calling for a clear cold night, we're going.

so i'm baking up a warm loaf of apple cinnamon oatmeal bread, slicing apples and cheese, and wishing i had a thermos to keep some water warm for some chai tea lattes. and though this probably comes off as pretentious and sickeningly cliche, its the first time i've ever done such a thing. i've packed picnics but its never been the opera and its never been lattes. its just that...last year when we went to see lucinda williams gratis at the same perfectly organic venue, there were much more seasoned folks in attendance with their hundred dollar picnic baskets and twenty year old bottles of wine and their tea lights and picnic blankets and their cheese knives and real plates (not even paper!) and there we were ordering hot dogs from the park concession stand wishing we'd had the idea ourselves to bring something along.

but not this time.

and its the opera and its been so long since i've seen an opera that i couldn't be more pleased if it was going on in my very own front yard.

and its june and a bit cold. the beauty of summer and flowers with the trappings of october.

i wish every day was sunday.
