introspective periscope : peeking inside since Y2K ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- here come the judge how the world plays tricks on yo - twenty fifth of september, 2003 "the little boys are breaking bottles against the sidewalk the big boys, too...the girls are hanging out at the candy store pumping quarters into the phone 'cause they don't want to go home."~ani difranco funny thing. i was watching the news while i got ready for work yesterday. typical stuff for our city: fires, shootings, accidents. and then a judge who has a reputation for dealing harshly with drunk drivers and underage drinkers. i perked up. when i was 18, a few of my then friends and i decided it would be a good idea to rent a hotel room to drink rather than drink in my apartment because the neighbors next door had a baby girl and we didn't want to make too much noise. so we packed up the bottles that we'd procured from who knows where (i think some of them were from a friend's parent's home, as i recall) and headed to the cheapest hotel in town. the oldest of us checked in to the hotel. we waited in the car. we were gathering our luggage and waiting for the others to join us when the cops rolled up. when it was all said and done, i had a court date with the others and we had to stay in the nasty hotel room all night with no drinks to be had. and we still somehow managed to laugh our way through the night. funny memory. and then there he was on the television screen, years later. judge wagner was arrested himself for drunk driving. he ran into a pole a few yards away from a bar in north park and failed a field sobriety test. funny how the world works that way. funny how the strangest things make you remember people you'd nearly forgotten. funny story. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- .what came before. - .what happened next. a diamond at the bottom of the drain - 20 october 2017 |
